Run Club Week 6
It’s a wrap on 6 week run club! We couldn’t have had a more beautiful day for it… the park was stunning and running as the sun comes up is one of my favourite ways to start the day.
In the first week, the intervals were set at a 1 minute run. This was difficult for pretty much everyone because the club was targeted for beginners. I remember talking to a few different people and they were concerned they wouldn’t be able to keep up or that it would be too hard. 5 weeks from that point, people ran 5 minute intervals, sped walked 1, 7 times. A total distance of 5.5km was run.. I encouraged them to step back and look at how far they had come! What an improvement over 6 weeks. That’s the thing about running- you feel like crap when you are pushing your boundaries so it’s hard to see the improvements long term.
Running is something that has the ability to make you feel so uncomfortable, but you get over it quickly. Every week feels harder, until one day a 30 minute run doesn’t feel like that big of a deal. Then you have a new barrier to break. I loved that a few people who “hated running” and “sucked at it” ending up loving it and were the most committed. My goal from the beginning was that this club would inspire people to love running.
Lululemon Willowbrook was amazing- I love this community. They wanted to reward our two most committed members and gave them a little gift at the end. I couldn’t think of two people who deserved it more. They also happen to be my patients, so I know their injury/medical stories. Without going into details for obvious privacy reasons, for them to have been so dedicated to taking up running was seriously inspiring.
As I was jogging through Derby reach coaching technique I couldn’t believe this is what I get to do- teach people how to move and feel better. Run Club was a great success! If anyone has been following along on the internet, your last week is posted. Langley folks, stay tuned for more great things ;)
I think a Langley Beer/Run club is in order!
